Case wheelchair positioning

A Real-Time Location System (RTLS), developed by WiTTRA Networks, has successfully been implemented at Stockholm Arlanda Airport. This innovative solution will improve wheelchair logistics for the PRM passenger service and enhance operational efficiency.

WiTTRA deployed an RTLS network in all public spaces (100,000 m2) at Arlanda Airport (4 terminals over 4 levels, approximately 70 gates), and tags were installed on wheelchairs to track their location. The system utilises wireless technology for positioning, based on an open standard (6LoWPAN).

Significant improvements in various operational areas are expected following the implementation of the RTLS network:

1. Enhanced Passenger Flow:
Real-time visibility of wheelchair location optimises the coordination of Passengers with Reduced Mobility (PRM) assignments, significantly improving service quality. This enhanced coordination adds substantial value by reducing waiting times, particularly during peak hours, ensuring a more efficient and satisfying experience for passengers utilising PRM services.

2. Optimized Resource Allocation:
The system enables staff to swiftly locate and assign wheelchairs, significantly enhancing operational efficiency. This improved process results in reduced walking distances for personnel and decreased time spent per assignment, ultimately resulting in a dual benefit: Elevated service quality and improved staff productivity and well-being.

3. Enhanced Accessibility: The system significantly improves airport accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility. Through efficient location tracking and coordination, the service’s availability is optimised, allowing more passengers with mobility challenges to receive assistance in less time. This streamlined approach not only reduces wait times but also enhances the overall travel experience for those requiring special assistance.

Multi-purpose Deployment

Beyond wheelchair tracking, the solution offers opportunities to increase digitalization and improve the airport experience:
• Monitoring operational health of automatic doors, revolving doors, elevators, escalators as well as energy metering.
• Potential for tracking other objects moving throughout the airport, such as vehicles, baggage trolleys, and also monitoring waste bin levels.

This versatility demonstrates the system’s capacity to support comprehensive airport modernization efforts, driven by rapid Return on Investment.
